Keynote Speakers

Monday, September 17
2:45 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Opening Keynote: Reality Based Rules of the Workplace: Boosting Employee Value and Happiness at Work

Cy Wakeman

Author, Reality Based Leadership and The Reality-Based Rules of the Workplace
President and Founder, Reality-Based Leadership

After this session you’ll be able to:

  • Understand ways to add true value to an organization and enhance fluency in navigating changing times.
  • Implement the new Employee Value Formula for measuring worth by quantifying factors such as current performance, future potential, and emotional expensiveness.
  • Explain the five reality-based rules of becoming a happy top performer and how to apply those principles in the workplace.
  • Drive organizational results by changing mindsets and empowering your team to take charge of their own happiness.

Why this is important:

Tough economic times have left employees feeling dejected and undervalued, and having to do the same amount of work with fewer people and resources; they have come to believe that suffering is now part of working life. Back by popular demand, Cy Wakeman will offer a revolutionary new look at how you, the leader, can work with your team to change their mindsets and join the ranks of happy high performers as she teaches the five reality-based rules of the workplace. By using these tools and techniques to face challenges, you can help staff turn the job they have into the job they want.

Just think, what if employees could go to work feeling energetic and excited – feeling truly valued and appreciated? Implementing the reality based rules of the workplace in your organization, will help your employees have fun, be productive, and return home at peace, with energy left over for family and friends; your entire team will learn to approach their reality from a different perspective. Join fellow perioperative managers as you make the commitment to change your mindset and follow Wakeman’s roadmap to higher ground.

8:15 a.m. – 9:15 a.m.

Perioperative Leadership 2023: Own Your Future or Be Disrupted By It

Craig Deao, MHA

Managing Director, Huron Senior Leader & National Speaker, Studer Group

After this session you’ll be able to:

  • Discuss future trends that will reshape perioperative services and the role of its leaders.
  • Describe Dual Transformation within the context of perioperative services.
  • List three competencies necessary for success both today and tomorrow.

Why this is important:

The last five years have seen unprecedented change in our world, as continued upward pressures on quality and downward pressures on cost have driven our organizations to do things better. The next five years will require us to do fundamentally different things, as consumer expectations, workforce challenges, technological innovation, changing reimbursement and new market entrants radically disrupt the playing field. In this session we’ll discuss the trends shaping our future and how we, as the leaders, can own our future rather than be disrupted by it.

Tuesday, September 18
4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Second Victim’s Silver Lining: Creating a Culture of Patient Safety

Ridley Barron

Author, Twist of Faith

After this session you’ll be able to:

  • Create both staff and patient friendly environments.
  • Increase awareness of individual patient concerns in regard to their safety.
  • Create patient-centered care that takes place in threat-free environments through greater awareness of safety issues.
  • Explain concerns focused on the “second victim.”

Why this is important:

What can be done in our healthcare systems to improve overall quality? As people continue to serve in healthcare, there will remain at least one human component: the potential for error. In this presentation, you will share the journey of the family member of one victim, and be challenged by seven simple principles that are drawn directly from his personal experience.

We all face millions of half-second decisions in a day. As such, this keynote serves as a welcome reminder that in coasting through our work, there is the potential to lose sight of the good we do and make a choice that is fatal. Leave the session with practical steps to promote safety in your culture and ways to remember the importance of your work, each and every day.

Wednesday, September 19
11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Closing Keynote: IQ Will Get You Hired, EQ Will Get You Promoted

Meg Soper, RN

Professional Speaker and Comedian, Former OR Nurse

After this session you’ll be able to:

  • Shift your perspective to better deal with adversity and conflict.
  • Recognize and understand the different generations in the workplace.
  • Use both sides of your brain for inspirational leadership.
  • Explain the four key elements to creating a positive work culture.

Why this is important:

This interactive, high-energy session offers a lighthearted look at the challenges of everyday life in the OR and the postanesthesia care unit. Meg Soper takes a humorous look at a topic we are all too familiar with: how to efficiently cope with day-to-day stresses while being an effective leader. She will focus on communication skills and working with different generations while demonstrating how we as leaders have control over the attitude we bring with us to work. It is possible to create a positive environment through our interactions with others; we can lead using both sides of our brain. Leave the conference with a kick in your step, feeling empowered about the work you do and the difference you make in your role.
